A giant, growing sinkhole formed outside of The Shelly Co. limestone mine in 2022 after a heavy storm. Today, this sinkhole is rapidly approaching the I-270 interstate highway near S. High St. In partnership with Heer to Serve, we are demanding that the mine be shut down.

A neighboring surface mine is utilizing daily blasting of C4 to harvest limestone. A nearby unsheltered camp, Ollie’s Camp, was recently relocated because of the dangers of the expanding sinkhole. The sinkhole can be seen from aerial photos emerging in 2022 and has been rapidly expanding since then to an estimated ½ mile in length. If the sinkhole were to double in size, it would pose significant risk to the I-270 interstate highway and the Scioto River.

We Demand: Mayor Andrew Ginther must declare an emergency for an environmental disaster and stop the active development and progression of Rezoning in the immediate area. The Shelly Co.’s operating permits must be revoked and the mine must close.
