In September 2023, the Great Circle Earthworks and the Octagon Earthworks, which are two of the eight locations in Ohio’s Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage I List. The Great Circle and Octagon, collectively known as the Newark Earthworks, formed the largest of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks complexes built by American Indians 2,000 years ago.

The Octagon and Great Circle both feature geometric shapes, all crafted from earth carried and placed intentionally, one basketful at a time. These earthworks are masterpieces of creative human genius, leaving lasting marks of a culture that is no longer present but profoundly influenced the shaping of the landscape.
