The Southern Orchards Civic Association, in partnership with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Serve Ohio, Kreis Companies, Church and Community Development For All People, Family Missionary Baptist Church, HandsOn Central Ohio, and several additional local organizations, are excited to invite you to join them on Monday, January 21 for a day of discussion, reflection, service, volunteerism and celebration in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Church and Community Development for All People, 946 Parsons Ave., will be hosting this event which will be made up of three main parts. Americorps will start the day off at 12noon with “Justice Talking,” five different discussions centered around Dr. King’s beloved community philosophy.
Volunteers will be able to start checking in for the main service event at 1pm. During this service event, volunteers, paired with a block captain who lives on the South Side, will work together to knock every door in the neighborhoods of Southern Orchards, Ganthers Place, South Side C.A.N., and Livingston Park, delivering resource bags to residents.
All are invited to return to Church and Community Development for All People at 6pm for a free community meal and celebration. Community leaders Rev. John Edgar of Church and Community Development for All People and Pastor Frederick LaMarr of Family Missionary Baptist Church will co-lead a short celebration.
In preparation for the event, HandsOn Central Ohio will be hosting a Neighborhood Ambassador Training at Career Gateway Training Center, 747 E. Whittier St., on Wednesday, January 16, 6-7:30pm. Neighborhood Ambassadors are part of a network of volunteers who help implement unique solutions to social challenges that are common to Columbus’ neighborhoods. The Southern Orchards Civic Association is a recognized civic association serving the southeast side of Columbus, Ohio. First established in 1982, this organization aims to unite and preserve its community through partnerships and to foster civic involvement with monthly engagements.
