Monday, April 9, 7-9pm, Columbus Mennonite Church, 35 Oakland Park Ave.

Today’s program: a screening of “Citizen King,” a two-hour-long TV episode that had aired on PBS on January 19, 2004

“Citizen King” draws on input from a broad cross-section of people to examine the final five years of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life.

This documentary, that had been aired on local PBS affiliates, is a great account of King, as a human being, that shows some regular journalistic footage but also some home movie-type scenes and stills that are priceless. The eyewitnesses and biographers/historians include some antagonistic folks from Birmingham and FBI-types who still have grudges and “issues” with this landmark American leader. It does give a variety of contemporary colleagues valuable chances to put some of the events of the years into context.
