Celebrating 52 years of progressive political activism, a commitment to social justice, and taking collective action to improve the lives of everyone in our community, ComFest is an experiment in uplifting and transforming this community.
The last full weekend in June brings us to beautiful Goodale Park, back to the proverbial garden, to reconnect with fellow travelers, to meet new friends, and to lament the absence of those who have moved on.
In 1972, a group of community activists, students, artists, and small businesspeople cobbled together a block party near the OSU campus to share ideas and strategies, and celebrate the promise of a better community. Live music, a little beer, and a lot of idealism brought organizations together like the Columbus Tenants Union, the Open Door Clinic, the Food Co-op, the Gay Activists Alliance, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, the Women’s Action Collective, and the Columbus Free Press, to educate, motivate and sign up for better local government, demand that institutions start working for residents, and implement policies focused on people.
Today, ComFest is an essential community event that, over the years, has had an enormous impact on the city in which we live. Whether it’s providing grants that nurture grassroots organizations, offering exposure to the city’s deep reservoir of local musical talent, hosting workshops to educate and urge direct action on important issues, or opening hearts and minds to the diversity of our neighbors, ComFest has made Columbus a better place.
