The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is conducting a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) on the production of nuclear bomb cores, called plutonium pits. The United States has not produced plutonium pits on a large scale since 1989, raising concerns about the impact of this production on the environment and human health.
Historically, the US government has not properly considered the higher impact of radiation on women and children. With the draft PEIS being made available to the public this Spring, we must make sure the NNSA includes these demographics in their assessment and that all people are properly represented.
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) invites you to our Global Security Talk on the impacts of radiation exposure on public health. As the United States rushes toward resuming nuclear weapons production, it's past time we ensure exposure risks and standards are representative of all populations, particularly those most vulnerable.
