Katherine Stewart is an American journalist and author who often writes about issues related to the separation of church and state. Her books include The Good News Club: The Christian Right’s Stealth Assault on America’s Children (2012) and The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism (2020).

Over the past four decades, the religious right has achieved remarkable progress toward its longstanding goal of weakening or even destroying public education altogether, while diverting money to conservative Christian schools. The movement’s successes have mounted with the appointment of Betsy DeVos, who stands at the intersection of two family fortunes that helped build the Christian right, and who has singled out education reform as a way to “advance God’s Kingdom.”

Now, DeVos and her allies in the Trump administration are exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to divert public money to religious and private schools at the expense of public education. In this talk, Katherine Stewart will detail the causes and consequences of these efforts, as well as strategies for protecting our children and preserving our democracy.
