City Council

Joe Motil, former Columbus City Council candidate and longtime outspoken critic of the Mayor Ginther and City Council’s tax incentive policies states that, “Our city’s income tax revenues are taking a beating during this COVID crisis and property taxes continue to rise while causing rent increases and home foreclosures to those getting hit the hardest by COVID. City Council also just recently had to cut $41.5 million from its operating budget due to a reduction in city income revenues. And yet Mayor Ginther and City Council continue to give tax abatements away to the tune of $56 million since COVID first impacted the city’s revenues in March. And just last week, City Council gave back $10,274, 785 in city income tax revenue to 26 local companies through a Job Growth Incentive Program.

As Election Day creeps ever nearer, we’ve been inundated with nonfiction books and films telling us just how dangerous and inept the current occupant of the Oval Office is. In the last month or so alone, I’ve seen and reviewed documentaries persuasively arguing that Donald J. Trump is psychologically handicapped (#Unfit) and environmentally hostile (Public Trust).

Combine these with the almost daily threats to our democracy that emanate from 45’s own lips, and you have a situation that leaves our nerves frayed and longing for a break. Fortunately, I found one in the form of a satirical novel that is as politically astute as it is viciously funny.

Released at the end of August, Carl Hiaasen’s Squeeze Me takes place roughly now in the part of north Florida that serves as Trump’s second home. After pulling us in the mysterious disappearance of a wealthy society matron, Hiaasen keeps us turning pages with a plot that involves giant reptiles, jingoistic attacks and one woman’s stubborn search for the truth.

Kristina Johnson

Dear President Kristina Johnson:

I am writing to urge you to change the "Buckeye Ways" that are harming the relationship between Ohio's flagship university and its most important constituents, the 11.7 million Ohioans.

First, I must persuade you that the university is not supposed to be a playground for its well-connected trustees -- who come from the upper strata of society  and are hardly representative of Ohioans --, the rich and influential, the athletic department, and the Ohio political class.

Rather, OSU should be reflecting the needs and wants of the state's residents. It is the past and present Ohio taxpayers who put up the lion's share of the money and credit to build and maintain this colossus of higher education, yet many of the sons and daughters of those taxpayers have been getting the shaft because they cannot gain admission to the main campus as freshmen.

New information reveals that the Election Administrator in Shelby County, TN, manipulated the bids for a new voting system to favor Election Systems & Software (ES&S). The administrator, Linda Phillips, increased competitors' bids by millions of dollars. She also increased the bids for hand-marked paper ballot (HMPB) voting systems by millions of dollars to make ballot-marking device touchscreens (BMDs) look more competitive by comparison.

The Election Commission thought they were looking at the actual bid numbers presented by 3 vendors (ES&S, Hart InterCivic, and Dominion Voting Systems), but they actually only saw Phillips' manipulated numbers.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden were athletes who got deferments and dubious medical-based exemptions to participating in the mass slaughter of Vietnamese, Laotian, and Cambodian men, women, and children.

The common criticism of one or the other of them, based on partisan loyalty, is that he should have participated in mass murder. Questioning this notion results, most often, in ad hominem attacks against the questioner: but you weren’t there, you can’t know what you would have done, etc.

But we know what thousands of young men did: they refused to go. Many chose not to use available deferments, preferring to refuse to go.

On October 8th, you’ll be able to screen online the film The Boys Who Said No.

Why would people risk 5 years in prison to take a stand against mass murder?

Were they all losers and suckers, as Trump might claim?
